Liposuction is the most commonly performed operative procedure performed by plastic surgeons. As a patient, if you are considering liposuction, you should be aware of a few things. Liposuction, it is not a procedure to be taken lightly. Many surgeons tell patients that it is "no big deal" and there is not much to it. That is just not true.

Liposuction can be broken down into many different parts. First is the mechanical act of removing the bulk of the deep fat. Deep fat differs from superficial fat. If superficial fat is not removed carefully dimples and contour irregularities can occur. After the initial de bulking of the deep fat, then superficial contouring can progress.

It is also important to know that if your physician is not very well trained in liposuction, then you can be at risk for complications. Many who perform liposuction are trained at weekend courses; needless to say, this is very different from the way plastic surgeons are trained.

It takes about 4-6 weeks for the swelling to adequately resolve after these procedures. Most patients wear a compressive garment for the first 4 weeks and then in the evenings after that if they so choose. Bruising is typically not much of an issue and patients go home the same day of surgery unless over 10 or so pounds are removed.
